If you’re on your way to a conference, convention, or trade show in Toronto, autumn is spectacular. They don’t call them the Toronto Maple Leafs for nothing. You’d best hurry, tho, if you want to catch the color, because the fall foliage season is winding down in Ontario. If you get there in time, please send pics and even your favorite Leaf joke!

But for most of you looking to attend or plan an event in Toronto, it’s time to look forward to winter. And there’s a winter wonderland to look forward to in Toronto.

Take a look at this video of the Harbourfront Centre skating rink. The world’s largest ice rink is a very cool place to stretch your legs between meetings, and you can even skate under the lights at night.

There’s also Toronto’s Winter City Festival coming up January 30th. Maybe you’d like to plan your conference, convention, or trade show around this two week event. And let’s not forget to mention Niagara Falls in winter – well worth the two hour hop from Toronto to see this amazing natural beauty along with the man-made Festival of Lights!

Toronto: Hogtown or City Within a Park?

October 21, 2009 by lmb1962

Why do they call Toronto Hogtown? The answer: No one really knows. It’s the economic capital of Canada; twenty-five percent of Canada’s population lives in the Toronto Metropolitan area, and it’s one of the world’s most diverse cities, with nearly half the population born outside of  Canada. It’s second only to New York City in the number of high-rises, home to North America’s largest and best preserved collection of Victorian industrial architecture and just a hop, skip and a jump from Niagara Falls. So where are the hogs?

If you’re going to a trade show or conference in Toronto, you may prefer to refer to it by one of its other nicknames, the City Within a Park.  Get a feel for all the area has to offer at the official visitor site.  You’ll find travel tips, attractions, and more, including links on places to have a same-sex wedding. Toronto claims to be home to the first officially recognized same-sex marriage in North America, and appears to have become a Vegas-style wedding destination for these ceremonies.

Get dialed in on Toronto and Canada news at the Toronto Star, which claims to be the country’s largest online news site. The site also has plenty of arts and entertainment listings, as well as restaurant reviews. Restaurant listings can also be found at TorontoRestaurants.com (turn down the volume on your computer before you click on any restaurant links), Dining.to.com and Toronto.com, which also features bars, shopping and events. If you prefer professional restaurant reviews, try 10Best.com for dining, event and attraction recommendations from travel writers and restaurant critics.

Toronto Green SpaceAs cosmopolitan as T-O is, you’re never far from nature. The city is laced with green areas and quiet places you can slip into to escape the hustle. You don’t have to work very hard to find them, but if you do want to go out of your way to see something spectacular, check out the Royal Botanical Gardens. The park features 300 acres of display gardens (including the world’s largest collection of lilacs and over a quarter million spring flowering bulbs), 2400 acres of wilderness and 30 miles of nature trails.  It also hosts over 25 annual festivals and events, so it’s sure to be a worthwhile trip.

Niagara Falls is a little farther out of town, (about two hours) but the drive is lovely.  The official site has lots of visitor information, but doesn’t really do it poetic justice.  If you’re undecided about making the drive, read the review at DiscoverNiagara.com and you’ll be convinced.

And if you run into any hogs, send us a photo.

How to Have a Jolly Good Time in London

October 20, 2009 by sorel

Visiting London for a trade show or conference? London has been a center of culture and commerce for over two millenia, making you the modern counterpart of all the tribes and traders who have passed through the city over the years. They, alas, did not have the internet to pave the way to a perfect pilgrimage, but you do.

Start by visiting the official tourist site to get a feel for the place. The “What’s On” section details entertainment options.

For all things related to getting around the city, including maps, tickets and walking routes go to Transit for London. The London Times website can provide you with news, current events and activity listings.

London is home to four World Heritage sites: the Tower of London; the historic settlement of Greenwich; the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; and the site comprising the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey and St. Margaret’s Church; you could do worse than to build your visit around visiting these.

Or, you could build your visit around theatre.

London Theatre Guide has reviews of all the show and festivals as well as links to buy tickets. It even lists shows rumored to be coming, so if you don’t see what you want, check there. TheatreGuideLondon exclusively features reviews by top theatre critics, untainted by ticket or ad sales on the site. It does have insider hints on finding inexpensive or hard-to-get tickets.

Or, you could structure your visit around eating and drinking. Top10.com will show you the best pubs by category: value pubs, sports pubs, traditional London pubs, pubs by neighborhood and editors picks. London-Eating features pub and restaurant listings with diner reviews. London Restaurants Guide has similar features and also lists celebrity haunts.

Or you could spend your time trying to catch a glimpse of the royals. Diaries of scheduled public appearances for the Queen and the Prince of Wales and other lesser royals are available online.

Not going but want to? Join the Visit London website and spend your time entering one of the many competitions to win a London vacation.
